Offshore
Offshore – Best time of year May – August, but on good winter days we can get offshore. In the lower keys we are very fortunate that our runs for productive fishing are not far. Under the right conditions we can start fishing offshore species running less than 10 miles offshore. Our premiere offshore catch is the Mahi-Mahi or Dolphin fish. We use a couple of different techniques to catch these fish. Run and gun where we are running at high speed looking for birds, floating grass patches or any other floating debris where we cast lures, live and dead bait to the fish. We can also troll for them. Wahoo and Black Fin Tuna are also part of this mix, the wahoo are more of a winter target and we catch them trolling; in the summer we just vertical jigs to catch them on debris. This same debris usually has TripleTail on it. For the tuna we live bait, troll and use vertical jigging techniques. Between the running to find the Mahi we’ll stop at deep offshore spots and drop baits on electric reels for such species as Snowy Grouper, Yellow Edge Grouper, Scamp Grouper, Golden Tile, Blueline Tile, Barrel fish, and Black Belly Rose fish. In shallower waters (250-500) we deep drop for Red Porgy, YellowEye and Vermillion Snappers. This is also where we can run to the famous Key West ‘wall’ about 22 miles east of key west and try our luck for a swordfish!!
